$ales Science & Creating Maximum Revenues:
Brain Chemistry & Why Customers Purchasing
Decisions Are Influenced By Dopamine.

A few concepts to wrap your head for this article:

The first involves understanding the connection between dopamine and:

  • All Of The Decisions You Make
  • Your Attention Span Length
  • What Engages You
  • Your Willingness to Interact
  • Sales & Conversions
  • Pleasure, Peace, Pain & Fear

The second involves understanding that this is not magic, voodoo or wives tales.

It is extremely important that you know why your business can benefit from properly understanding the significance of dopamine in marketing.

To do that, you first need to understand how dopamine functions in human decision making and what else dopamine does in your body.

Why Does Dopamine Control Your Decisions?

The reasons why dopamine controls all decisions humans make are many and numerous, some are not completely understood, but we do know that it does and is as natural as it comes.

What is known is that your brain is constantly processing neural, biological, cognitive, physical, sensory and situational “information” signals, through your organs, skin, eyes, ears, mouth etc.

Most decisions are regulated by these information signals, in particular signals from the eyes.

Interesting to note that these signals also are responsible for what you attach your attention to.

Our company EyeBall Glue is hard at work to provide solutions to engage human attention longer. Because what humans apply their visual attention to, often is decided upon faster.

Often humans prefer to see something as well, before making decisions on whether they want to give it more attention, or decide to involve themselves with it.

You can think of “decisions” as the result of neurons in your brain receiving these “informational” signals that regulate the parts of your brain that control your thought processes, motor control functions and many other functions. In an effort to decide what is good, bad or neutral for you, as well as what your body needs and senses. Your decision making areas of your brain process these “information” signals.

In doing so, your brain will process the chemical building blocks of dopamine that it has stored from you consuming certain kinds of food.

Dopamine typically is the byproduct of consuming certain building block foods that together with processes in the body release dopamine.

One of the building blocks is resveratrol. Found in pistachios, grapes, red and white wine, blueberries, and many others, resveratrol is one ingredient needed in dopamine production.

Phenylalanine is another building block of dopamine commonly found in milk, eggs, cheese, nuts, beans and many other foods.

Bananas, yogurt, lima beans, pumpkin seeds, and plenty of other foods can supply much needed Tyrosine, another required ingredient to produce dopamine.

As your brain processes these dopamine ”ingredients”, dopamine is released in various areas of the brain relevant to the “information” signals and the resulting decisions the brain makes.

Neurons in two parts of your brain release dopamine that then interacts at a biochemical level and controls the parts of your brain responsible for your decision making to dictate your movements.

In short, dopamine controls how and what you think about and why you make decisions and movements, among many other things, but those are the focus of this article.

If movement is required, the area of the brain responsible for motor control functions will receive a signal to move. If further thought or speaking is required, then that area of the brain will receive the appropriate signal and so on.

This production potentially may make a recommendation that you are for, or against what caused this “information” signal to be produced.

What is determined by your senses and brain to potentially be good attracts you. Alternatively, the opposite generally causes you to decide to move away until it can no longer affect you.

If something causes neither good or bad feelings, it is neutral and while its neutrality may intrigue you, chances are that most times, your decision processes will make no positive or negative recommendation and you will take no action. It is also important to understand what dopamine actually is.

What is Dopamine?

Dopamine is a chemical hormone and a “neurotransmitter” produced in your brain that when released, sends nervous system commands to other areas of the brain.

Dopamine is also kind of like the fuel that powers your brain to modulate the neural impulses that control, activate, stop and regulate your motor control functions and your muscles.

It is 100% responsible for everything by initiating your every thought, actions or movement.
In particular,  dopamine is primarily responsible for controlling every single decision you make about where to focus your attention.

Yes, it is your “focus juice” that powers everything you focus on, think or don’t think, do or don’t do.

Dopamine is found in every mammal, most animals and even in plants.

But humans have loads of dopamine, you are gaining dopamine as you evolve.

Many refer to dopamine as the“feel-good” hormone, because it serves an important function in the brain’s reward system.

It is known to create pleasant sensations and is known to have effects on learning and memory.
For this discussion, think of dopamine like a drug you release in your brains when you get closer to anticipation of receiving a reward, or when you actually get the reward.

However dopamine is not just your personal pleasure drug, as discussed later, recently scientists discovered it also controls decisions about pain, what we fear or do not like. This is significant to your business.
Dopamine is also responsible for nonemotional functions. Breast milk production for one, is controlled by dopamine.

Which is why men who take antipsychotic medications that alter dopamine production, can find themselves sporting a serious ‘moob” problem. If you are a “moobians” housewife, you may want to check the medicine cabinet out.

Your brain produces many chemical “neurotransmitters” that it takes it’s orders from, dopamine is no doubt the dominant neurotransmitter.
Dopamine signals your brain to seek out everything including, sources of pleasure, necessities, survival enablers, wants, needs, desires, addictions and much more! This is why it is so important in your decision making processes and why businesses who sell things people “want”, need to understand this.

Dopamine is the reason why good food, a good story and anything that you enjoy, has pleasurable feelings associated with it. These “feelings” lodge in your memory and remind you often when you are having negative feelings. They beckon you to soothe your problems with pleasure or reward, dopamine is the “yin”, to life’s “yang’s”.

This is why dopamine controls what you spend your time, attention AND money on, more than not.

Some of you may already know some of the functions of dopamine. But few know that dopamine is in all mammals, most animals and it is believed that every single plant and millions of other organisms all contain, produce or process dopamine.

Why plants make dopamine is not fully understood. Some of the reasons animals and mammals contain and produce dopamine are understood, but many remain unknown. While dopamine was first synthesized in 1910 in England by George Barger and James Ewens, it wasn’t discovered in the human brain until 1957.

The application of the dopamine effect in the human brain for your marketing and longer human attention span sessions is already proven to improve sales, a LOT.
